BASIC CALL-TAKERS/DISPATCHERS TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES
December 10-11, 2018
This program will assist the participant in focusing on critical areas and problems associated with communication center call-taking and dispatching. Effort will be spent looking at the specific communication center environment and discussing the special skills and techniques required of personnel engaged in these functions and fulfillment of their duties. Special skills and techniques will be discussed along with the necessary attributes for communication center personnel. By the conclusion of the program, participants should have a better understanding of (1) role of communications in public safety; (2) communication center environment: staffing, stress, and personal rewards; (3) ethics and integrity in communications; (4) call-taker roles and responsibilities--accountability to community and department; (5) telephone techniques and CAD entries; (6) challenges of language barriers including foreign, slang, and cultural differences; (7) dispatcher roles and responsibilities in terms of community needs and officer safety; (8) keys to effective communication for the radio operator; (9) radio language: code and professional demeanor; (10) effective pre-arrival instructions; and (11) liability issues for the call-taker and radio operator.
ROLE AND FUNCTION OF THE COMMUNICATION CENTER TRAINING OFFICER
December 12-13, 2018
A seminar designed specifically for personnel who serve as training officers within communication centers. Program will explore various aspects of the role of the training officer as well as how to utilize available resources so as to upgrade the skill and competencies of communication center staff, whether call-takers or dispatchers. Topics include: (1) goal of one-on-one training for call-takers and dispatchers; (2) recognizing the importance and role of the communication center trainer; (3) determining whether the San Jose Model of Field Training might fit into center staff development; (4) way of training the new call-taker and/or dispatcher; (5) explaining liability issues connected with communication center work; (6) use of daily observation reports; and ways to write a training narrative
INSTRUCTOR: Both seminars will be facilitated by Miles Turner, Supervisor and Communications Center Training Officer, Virginia State Police, Richmond, Virginia (retired)
LOCATION/TIME: United States Government Publishing Office, 732 North Capitol Street NW, in Washington, DC. Classes will be in session 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each program day.
